Nightly Reset Routine
As a mom of two little kids (ages 3 and 1), I’ve learned that if I don’t spend a little time resetting my home at night, the next morning feels ten times harder. I used to think nightly resets had to be perfect. Spotless kitchen. Perfectly folded laundry. Everything put away before bed.But honestly? That’s just not realistic in this season of life. Now my goal is simple: Create a calmer morning for myself. This realistic nightly reset routine helps me stay on top of the chaos without spending hours cleaning every night. The Nightly Reset Routine That Helps Me Feel Less Overwhelmed
Why I Started Doing a Nightly Reset
Before I started this routine, I constantly woke up already feeling behind. The sink was full. Toys were everywhere. Laundry baskets piled up and mornings felt stressful before they even started I realized I didn’t need a perfect house. I just needed a few simple systems that made life feel more manageable. My nightly reset is less about having a spotless home and more about reducing my mental load. My husband and I call it power-hour (even though its never an hour)... we put on some music in our airpods and jam out while we work (great way to reduce stress and unwind!)
My Realistic Nightly Reset Routine
Most nights this takes me about 15–20 minutes total. Some nights I do everything. Some nights I only do a few things and honestly, that’s okay.
Reset the Kitchen
This is the biggest thing that helps my mornings feel calmer is at least having a clean kitchen to start the next day! If I only do one thing it is this!. I try to:
load/start the dishwasher
wipe the counters
put away random cups and snacks
sweep up crumbs
clean baby bottles
We have a bin that we have all our bottles soak then we rinse and put in this sterilizer that also dries!!!
I love this vacuum wet mop for quickly cleaning up the kitchen floor after the kiddos eat!
Also love this counter top cleaner
Love this floor cleaner as well!
2. Pick Up the Living Room
With two little kids, toys somehow end up everywhere by bedtime. I do a quick toy pickup and put blankets and pillows back in place. I don’t aim for perfection I just try to make the room feel reset enough that I’m not overstimulated first thing in the morning. We also do a toy rotation every week or so! This keeps the toys out to a minimum!
I have a hutch that has these clear bins in them for small toys a lotsssss of cars
also love these bags to keep puzzles and small toys pieces together!
these basket for loose balls/stuff animals!
3. Prep for the Morning
This saves me so much stress. At night I try to:
lay out clothes for the kids
prep diaper bag items
make bottles
pack the car (stroller, bags, etc. )
Diaper Bag I love
Kids backpack I love (I will grab this if i want something smaller than my diaper bag)
Milk pitcher for formula/breast milk! I fill it up and use it all day!
4. Start One Load of Laundry
Laundry used to completely overwhelm me. Now I try to do smaller loads more consistently instead of letting everything pile up. Some nights I simply start a load before bed so I can move it over in the morning. If your washer has delay wash....it is a GAME CHANGER
Love these laundry bins that are mesh and collapsible!
5. Make Coffee Prep Easier
One of my favorite tiny habits is setting up the coffee area before bed. I have my nespresso loaded and a mug ready on the counter! Future me is always thankful.
Since having kids I don't have time to grind coffee and home it was just right to make sure I have my espresso. This machine is so easy and the pods are a little pricey but its cheaper than buying out and its way less work and frustration!
What I’ve Learned About Keeping Up With a Home
The biggest thing I’ve learned as a mom is that maintaining a home is easier than constantly trying to catch up on one.
Tiny resets matter more than marathon cleaning days.
And honestly, realistic systems work better than perfect routines.
There are still messy days.
There are still nights I skip the reset completely.
But having a simple routine I can come back to has helped me feel so much less overwhelmed.
My Biggest Tip for Moms
Don’t create a nightly routine based on your ideal life.
Create one based on your real life.
If you only have energy for a 10-minute reset, that still counts.
Small consistent habits make a bigger difference than trying to do everything perfectly.
Final Thoughts
Motherhood already comes with enough mental clutter.
My nightly reset routine helps me feel a little calmer, a little more prepared, and a little less behind when a new day starts.
And honestly, in this season of life, that’s enough.
