How I Balance a Toddler and Newborn: Our Realistic 2 Under 2 Daily Routine
When I was pregnant with my second baby, one of my biggest questions was: How am I supposed to balance a toddler and a newborn all day long? Now that we're living it, I've learned that the goal isn't creating the perfect schedule. It's finding a rhythm that keeps everyone fed, rested, and relatively happy. This is our realistic daily routine with a toddler and newborn. Some days go exactly as planned, and other days involve extra snacks, missed naps, and a little more screen time than I'd like. But overall, this routine helps our days run smoothly.

7:00 AM – Wake Up
Most mornings start somewhere between 0630/0700
I usually get my toddler first since as soon as he is let out of his crib/bed he is on the move. Then I go and get my baby because she is usually content hanging out in her crib and my son loves to wake her up with me! We then go a get my sons milk sippy cup and my daughter a bottle.
8:00 AM – Breakfast Time
While my toddler eats, I feed the baby or settle them nearby in a bouncer. Breakfast is simple because mornings can already feel chaotic with two little ones.
After breakfast, I clean up the kitchen and get ready for our morning activities.
9:00 AM – Play Time and Baby Nap
My toddler plays with toys, colors, reads books, or helps me with small household tasks while the baby takes a morning nap and another bottle.
I've learned that I don't need to entertain my toddler every minute of the day. Independent play has been one of the biggest lifesavers since bringing home a newborn. Once I get her to sleep my son and I read books, play outside, color lots of one on one time.
10:30 AM – Snack and Outside Time
If the weather cooperates, we head outside. Fresh air almost always improves everyone's mood. We might take a walk, play in the backyard, visit a playground, or simply sit outside on the porch. This is often the most enjoyable part of our day. We even venture out to a fenced in park or the library...this took a lot of practice to get confident in going out alone with both!
12:00 PM – Lunch
By lunchtime everyone is hungry. I keep lunch simple and predictable because afternoons can quickly become overwhelming if I'm trying to cook elaborate meals. Sometimes it is just a PB&J and fruit! and thats Okay!
After lunch, my son gets a milk sippy cup and my daughter plays a little before her bottle.
1:00/1:30PM – Nap Time
This is the part of the day that requires the most flexibility...but when I tell you this is HOLY TIME in our house! I mean it! We always try to be home for this nap for BOTH kids because it is their longest!! I'll be honest my son gets a show real quick while I put the baby down then I put him down!
If the timing works out perfectly, both kids are asleep at the same time for at least an hour an a half up to 3 hours!! When that happens, I try to avoid filling the time with chores and instead focus on resting, reading, or catching up on something I enjoy....maybe a nap and some trashy tv!!!
If you're in the thick of 2 under 2 life, you know how valuable a quiet house can be.
3:30/4 PM – Afternoon Reset
Once naps are over, we have a snack and start our afternoon.
This is often when energy levels shift. My toddler wants more attention, and the baby is usually ready for another feeding.
We rotate between playing indoors, running errands, or spending more time outside on the porch! My son loves watching the mail truck, school bus etc. go by!!
5:00/5:30 PM – Dinner
The late afternoon can be the hardest part of the day. Everyone seems tired and hungry at the same time.
I try to keep dinner realistic and focus on getting food on the table rather than making everything perfect. Sometimes I even prep ahead during nap time! We try to all eat together!
6:15/6:30 PM – Bath and Bedtime Routine
We start winding down for the night. We move to the bathtub where my baby gets in an infant tub and my son in the rest of the tub together!
The baby and toddler gets pajamas on, then we go read books, and we begin transitioning toward bedtime.
Meanwhile, the baby gets another feeding and goes down for the night then I take my son up to read him more books, brush teeth and tuck him in!
7:30–8:00 PM – Bedtime
Both kids are usually asleep sometime between 7:30 and 8:00 PM.
Not every night is smooth, but having a predictable bedtime routine helps everyone know what to expect. When my husband is gone and I'm solo I still stick to this routine it usually just takes my longer to get each kid asleep...maybe some more shows for my toddler but hey its called survival!
8:30 PM- Me Time!
This can be whatever brings you joy and unwinds! Audio book, bravo shoes, listening to music, working out! You do you !
The Secret to Balancing 2 Under 2
If there's one thing I've learned, it's that flexibility matters more than perfection.
Some days naps line up beautifully. Other days the baby cluster feeds, the toddler skips a nap, and the entire schedule falls apart.
That's normal.
Instead of chasing a perfect routine, I've focused on creating a rhythm that works for our family. The routine gives us structure, but there's still room for real life to happen.
And honestly, that's what has helped me survive and enjoy this season with a toddler and newborn.
